HIGH SCHOOL MANAGEMENT

Principal Aidan Hamill

I am very proud to join CIA FIRST as high school principal for this academic year. I have worked in education for over 15 years, most recently in neighboring Thailand. Growing up, I attended an international school in Brussels, Belgium. This has given me valuable insight into the challenges students face when studying abroad or in a non-native language.

All children are special - every single one. I view each student I encounter in my professional journey as a unique, valuable individual, and recognize that any decision I make must consider the effect it will have on that child. It is our privilege as school leaders to see to it that each child is given a healthy, engaging, supportive, and challenging environment within which they can thrive. To make this a reality, I’ve held closely to the following components as pillars of my own philosophy.
  • Listening to, learning from, and understanding those around me; by having an empathic approach across the many layers of a school, I can recognize and understand the needs of students, while also seeing the bigger picture and focusing on continued school improvement.
  • Promoting inclusion across campus; making sure each of our students and teachers feel that they are valued members of our school helps motivate them to get involved, take risks, and share their experiences.
  • Building connections with all community members; I encourage open and honest communication, idea sharing, and positive risk-taking, all which enable meaningful collaboration.
  • Taking a proactive and positive approach; thinking ahead and taking initiative has long been my way of protecting students; I strive to identify needs and find solutions.

While my approaches to education have evolved over the years, one thing remains at the core: All children are special. With this at the forefront of my mind, I will continue to guide my students in unlocking their potential, embracing their differences, and achieving the seemingly impossible.

Born and raised in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, I received a Master’s degree in Industrial Sciences from Group T Engineering College Leuven in 2000, a certificate of teaching skills from CVO De Oranjerie Diest in 2006, and a postgraduate certificate in Education from the University of Nottingham in 2016.

I worked as a microchip design & applications engineer and project manager at a Belgian semiconductor company from 2000 to 2006. I moved to Cambodia that same year and worked as an English as a Foreign Language teacher from 2006 to 2014, after which I accepted a position as a Physical Science teacher at CIA FIRST.

Over the years, I took on the roles of science lab coordinator and school timetabler, and helped to build high school systems and roll out the AP program. Recently, I became part of the high school leadership team as the Deputy High School Principal for Academic Administration, however, I will continue to teach AP Physics 1 to keep touch with the teaching profession. The skills and mindsets I developed as an engineer help me make decisions, solve problems, and build systems.
The purpose of education for me is to promote the long-term flourishing of students. We educators can achieve this by helping students to become better speakers, readers, writers, thinkers, and people. I want our students to acquire a broad and deep pool of powerful knowledge and understanding, a rich set of skills, and well-developed habits of mind. All students are capable of achieving this as long as they feel a sense of belonging, believe they can become better and  succeed through effort and care, and see value in the work they do. We ought to hold each student to high expectations and give them the support they need to succeed.

I want all CIA FIRST graduates to be independent-minded adults, who can decide for themselves when to follow their own path and when to conform to societal norms, while understanding each choice has consequences. Students are best served when teachers are seen as professionals, and when teachers and administrators use evidence-based practices. Teaching is complex. It is a science, an art, and a craft. Teachers, like all learners, can become proficient through deliberate practice and meaningful feedback. With our support, all our students can reach new heights of achievement.

Deputy Deepak Sehgal

It is a huge privilege and honor to have been promoted as a High School Deputy Principal (Pastoral Care) at CIA FIRST in 2020-21. My journey with the school for the last 9 years has been highly enriching as I was given the opportunity to serve and learn at different roles from a Mathematics teacher to Subject Coordinator, and recently as school wide Community Engagement Learning Coordinator. My fundamental philosophy as a passionate educator, who works hard to empower the students in becoming lifelong learners is to employ high expectations, strong relationships and personalized learning goals to get the best from every student, giving them ownership of their own, personal learning journey.

I am very proud to call Cambodia my home, having lived here now for nearly 10 years. Prior to teaching, I gained my customer service experience through working in different hotels at the beginning of my career and then moved to banking, finance and call center management positions. After joining the education sector in 2010, I have been fortunate enough to be in the unique position, whereby I have taught different age groups of students ranging from Elementary to the High School including university levels (Masters & Bachelors) as a lecturer, which gives me diverse understanding of student developmental needs and pedagogical frameworks.

I studied Hotel Management and Catering Technology after high school and gained a Bachelors in Commerce from Delhi University. Later as a working professional, I studied MBA in Human Resource and Marketing through an American Express management trainee program from Amity University, India. After joining CIA FIRST in Aug 2012, I had the privilege to study PGCEi (Education) from University of Nottingham, UK and I am also currently pursuing my MA in Educational Leadership & Management through the same University, where my dissertation is focused on Implementation of Schoolwide Restorative Practices in an International School Context.

Outside of school, I have many interests including going on new adventures and discovering new places, however sports and fitness has always played a huge part in my life. I enjoy keeping fit and running. I’ve completed 5 Angkor half marathons, all of them were run for CIA FIRST along with our High School students. In indoor sports, I enjoy chess and table tennis occasionally. I look forward to leading CIA FIRST students and staff to new heights of achievement.
