Word from the Elementary School Principal

It is a brand new world for the new G1 students the first time they come to the Elementary building. New expectations and new challenges are ushering them into a world of excitement and joy. At this age, students are gaining more coordination and building stamina and muscles. From being clumsy when they were in K5, they are gaining more control and improving small and big muscles. They are starting to write nicely and following more complicated rhythmic routines. They start to ask more questions and explore the world to find the answers. They now can read a number of sight words without sounding out. They use what they hear and read to learn and use simple information to answer questions. They begin to understand time and day and follow a schedule. They start to use language and combine simple sentences to form complicated sentences. They are building independence but may still demand a lot of attention and approval from adults. They are taught to stay on task and persevere as they work on their own and with their peers. They form friendship easily but can be critical with friends and hurt their feelings. Emotional support from teachers and other adults in school is provided to help them cope up with all the new changes in the elementary school. 

Then they move through the grades and develop their understanding and start to show interests in specific activities or subjects. They are now learning the connections of things and how they form a pattern especially in mathematics where they strengthen their understanding of number families and basic operations. They now can retell stories and summarize information and write what they feel. They are starting to problem solve and predict the consequences of their actions. 

Students in G5, as they are getting ready to move to middle school, are experiencing a lot of changes in their body as they grow fast in this stage. They now beginning to understand that they are different from other people and starting to form their opinions. They also develop a better sense of responsibility and are more caring towards younger students. They begin to use social media and develop internet research skills. They are now reading more complicated texts and write simple essays.They are expected to use a range of learning strategies or modalities to deepen their understanding of concepts. 

Elementary school years are an exciting, challenging,  and fun half a decade of learning. Students leave this level with an increased interest in learning and fulfillment of their achievement and growth.
