PARENTS AS PARTNERS ASSOCIATION

PaPA

“Parent Engagement” is the active and ongoing process of engaging parents, improving communication, collaboration, and deepening understanding and respect for international cultures and global citizenship toward the common goal of educating and developing the whole child.

Parents are the child’s first and foremost teachers. Together with the school, we can purposefully create environments conducive for your child’s holistic growth and development. As a parent, it’s only natural that you’ll want to take an active role in your child’s education. At
CIA FIRST International School, we actively encourage parents to engage with their child’s learning.

Picture
Goals and areas of partnership
  • Develop effective ways of helping parents support their child’s education
  • Dialogue with school leadership and provide solution-oriented feedback on school policies, procedures, and curricula
  • Create platforms for parents to meet and contribute valuable suggestions and feedback
  • Bring community resources to the school
  • Participate in school-wide events, such as Family Day and International Children’s Day

CIA FIRST values parent engagement, which we define as “the active and ongoing process of engaging parents, improving communication, collaboration, and deepening understanding and respect for international cultures and global citizenship toward the common goal of educating and developing the whole child.”
Effective parent engagement is much broader than parent-teacher conferences and/or parent volunteer hours in the school. PaPA is one additional piece of a broad and diverse tapestry of parent engagement.

What are the PaPAs?
PaPAs is the structure through which parents at CIA FIRST can work together to offer advice and ideas on how to improve the school and ensure the best possible education for their children. PaPAs work with school management to build an effective partnership between home and school.

Who are the PaPAs?
PaPAs are parents elected through a ballot at the beginning of each academic year. A chair, vice-chair and treasurer will be elected for Kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle and High School.
Once the PaPAs are elected, they will arrange periodic meetings with parents to discuss pressing issues and concerns while also collecting positive feedback to relay to school management.

Why are the PaPAs important?
There is significant research to support the fact that when parents are engaged in school activities, and in their child’s education, the child will receive many positive benefits, including being happier, having better attendance, higher grades, stronger self-esteem, better relationships with parents, going further in post-secondary studies, and earning higher income.

How can I become a PaPA member?
At the beginning of the academic year, CIA FIRST will announce dates for PaPA elections. At the election, any parent willing to become a PaPA can pitch to the group as to why they should be elected before an anonymous ballot is held.

How do I communicate best with the school management and with other parents? The PaPAs liaise with management via email, messaging services and meetings, usually set up by the communications officer. Sometimes the PaPAs will call the meeting if they have pressing issues and other times management will do so.
The language of communication in the messages is predominantly English and Khmer but Chinese, Thai, Korean, Hindu, German, Tagalog or Spanish will also be accepted as the school has a professional staff to respond in various languages.
Communication between parents predominantly happens via the PaPAs Facebook page. There are also meetings held in order to discuss school-based issues.

How much time I am expected to spend in my function as PaPa member?
We, at CIA FIRST, understand that parents are all busy with raising families and working. The role of the PaPAs is not overly time-consuming but we would like parents, who are both able and willing, to dedicate time to meeting with fellow parents and school management to help improve the school.

Is there a yearly calendar that guides me through the school year?
Yes, it’s available on the school website. We update it each semester with important events and holidays.

Who supports me and how can I get support?
PaPAs will be supported by the communications officer, who acts as an intermediary between them and school management. The three PaPAs for each school level will be expected to liaise with each other and share the workload.
