School-wide Learner Outcomes (SLOs)

The CIA FIRST’s School-wide Learner Outcomes (SLOs) are a set of twelve statements which describe what each CIA FIRST’s student will be able to independently use upon their graduation. SLOs have the following characteristics:

  • They are overarching (not subject-specific)
  • They are performance based (require transfer of understandings, not simply recall)
  • They require the use of the Habits of Mind, in combination with academic understandings, knowledge, and skills.
  • The SLOs drive all of CIA FIRST’s curriculum. Every unit of the instruction contains one or more of the SLOs as the long-term transfer goal. Students’ ability to display the SLOs will develop and deepen over time as they progress through courses and grade levels.

Students will be able to independently use their learning to:

  • Communicate effectively for a wide variety of purposes and audiences within and across cultures, using a broad range of tools and media.
  • Improve efficiency, productivity, creativity and communication through the skillful use of existing, adaptation to emerging, and creation of new technologies.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively with others notwithstanding individual differences, choosing when to lead or follow.
  • Effectively handle conflicts and misunderstandings through the use of empathy.
  • Comprehend, analyze, evaluate and synthesize complex information to broaden and deepen understanding, and to apply and share it in an ethical manner.
  • Critically appraise information for validity and reliability in order to aid decision making and potential modification of personal worldview.
  • Make informed decisions after analyzing situations from multiple perspectives.
  • Evaluate social systems in terms of their ability to serve the needs of the people they are designed to serve.
  • Pose probing questions and plan and carry out both quantitative and qualitative investigations to answer them.
  • Identify existing and emerging problems and formulate, justify and apply effective and optimized solutions.
  • Display curiosity and appreciation for both natural phenomena and human endeavour, in order to determine interests, passions and aspirations.
  • Reflect on their habits of mind, worldviews, attitudes and learning, set achievable personal and academic goals, and develop and apply effective strategies for growth.
