Interpreting the HoM: In your own words give your interpretation of what this HoM means and give a detailed example of how it can be used in the classroom or in life in the outside world. What sort of problem could it be used to solve? (150 words)

I think this HoM generally means to speak and communicate clearly and effectively amongst an audience of one or more people. You use this HoM whenever you are going to share ideas on something to someone else because when you speak to people, you’d want them to understand what you're saying and get a grasp of what you mean. With this HoM, you can improve that skill and be able to persuade people with the choice of words and evidence. When you speak with clarity and precision means you speak with clear words and precise meaning that allows people listening to catch the main idea along with the little details you might have included. This HoM can be used in classrooms whenever we are assigned tasks to give a presentation about a slideshow or a speech. Some assignments given to us can have a little presentation just to display your ideas off to the whole class. This HoM is required during that scenario because you have to communicate clearly for your classmates and the teacher to be able to listen and understand your ideas. In the outside world, we are using this HoM everywhere. Whether it be buying something from a store, calling a lift, greeting someone, all of this also uses this HoM because that way you can communicate with people. It could solve problems like when someone has a question about something you know, you answer them using this HoM to get your ideas through with their understanding.

Identify the HoM: Watch and listen to the following speech from The Mulligan brothers here- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhdZiFFoM7c

How do The Mulligan Brothers use the HoM to make their speech more effective? Which rhetorical techniques do they use to help motivate their audience? (100 words)

The Mulligan Brothers use the HoM to make their speech more effective by reaching out to the audience and giving ideas on what they might be holding onto. The Mulligan Brothers understood what inspires us and uses that to their advantage saying whatever inspires us, try to be the inspiration based on that. Also, they inspired confidence in us in some way because they mention stuff about us having potential and that we can do anything we want but it has no date. The Mulligan Brothers sort of pushes us to something we want to do and to stop setting a date for everything, that really leaves us no choice because we feel like if we back out, it won’t make them happy. The Mulligan Brothers used three rhetorical techniques, repetition, rule of three, and rhetorical questions. They used repetition when he talked about the different things that made you “feel the magic”. “when you witness an athlete surpass all expectations, you feel the magic. When you watch a movie that blows you away… you feel the magic. When you see the beauty in a sunset, when you listen to music or when you read something that connects you with whom you really are- you feel the magic.”. He sort of repeats similar things and ends it off with a similar phrase. The Mulligan Brothers used rule of three because with what he mentioned where everything and everyone started off before becoming something big. “A composer started with a single note, an athlete with a single movement and a tree with a single seed.”. He talked about composers starting with one note, an athlete starting with one movement and a tree starting with one seed. This is the rule of three because he used three phrases that are catchy and easy to remember. The Mulligan Brothers also used rhetorical questions (a lot actually). “What are you going to do? Are you going to let the masters inspire you to feel it? Or are you going to strive to be a master? Are you going to learn and grow and rise higher into your craft? Are you going to do more than just feel? Are you going to be?”. They used six rhetorical questions to give us more to think about.

Apply the HoM: You now need to describe two activities or problems from this unit where your application of the HoM allowed you to complete a task or solve a problem. (150 words)

An activity from class where we used this HoM was when we wrote a speech about our topic that we chose. We are instructed to write a persuasive speech that communicates ideas clearly and is able to persuade people into thinking a certain way. The topic I chose was about why students shouldn't be forced to give a speech in front of class. I used this HoM to help me complete this task because it is required that I communicate my ideas clearly and effectively so I made sure to choose the right words, the right sentences and the right evidence to further explain my topic in depth. Without this HoM, I wouldn’t have been able to complete this task because my speech would have been unclear and people won’t understand my main topic.
Another activity from class where this HoM was used is during the time when we created the propaganda posters. The task was to work in pairs or groups to make a propaganda poster supporting a side of an argument and we get to choose our own topics. The topic me and my pair chose was why people shouldn’t worry about the dangers of the new Covid-19. Using this HoM, I improved the poster because to communicate my ideas through a poster with little words, I'll need to use this HoM to communicate clearly with pictures. Without this HoM, I can’t complete this assignment because I wouldn’t be able to communicate my ideas through pictures and drawings.

Reflect on the HoM:

How well do you think you have used this HoM this unit and why? (50 words)

I think I have used this HoM fairly throughout this unit because I can speak clearly, communicate ideas effectively and use pictures or drawings to communicate a main idea. I think this whole unit also revolves around this HoM because it is mainly about propaganda and how people communicate their ideas to the world and how people persuade other people. This HoM plays a big role in it because in order to make propaganda, you need to have a good understanding or good base to communicate with people and know their interests so it is easier to change their minds.

Describe how this HoM could help you in the future. What might be a job role that you may have where this HoM could assist you? (50 words)

This HoM could assist me in the future because everywhere I go, I will need to communicate with people about different things. I can go shop for stuff and talk to the seller for specific items, I can go order food at a restaurant and talk to the server for items or I just simply talk to people. This HoM is needed for all of those scenarios and many more, so yes this HoM assists me everywhere I go. A job role that might require this HoM could be teachers or news anchors. These two job roles have clear communication as their key to become better at that role. If you are a teacher who can’t communicate clearly, students won’t learn, causing you to fail your job. If you are a news anchor who can’t give clear information on the weather, people can’t understand the weather patterns, causing you to fail your job as well.

As you go into High School how could this HoM help you? Can you give specific examples? (50 words)

As I go to high school, this HoM will prove of good use because the higher the grade I go, the more skills or improvements I require in HoMs. Clear speaking is among the most important because it is the key to almost everything I do. This HoM can help me present my ideas to the class whenever we have class presentations or IF we run for StuCo, this HoM will prove of great use to act as “propaganda” to make people vote for you.
